BELLINGHAM (September 7, 2021) — WECU announced today it will award a total of $110,000 to four local nonprofits, Whatcom Literacy Council, Futures Northwest, Wild Whatcom – Edventures, and Explorations Academy, as part of the credit union’s annual Education First Grant Program. Grants will be allocated over a two-year period.

“These organizations are doing amazing work for our community.” said Jennifer Kutcher, WECU President and CEO. “We’re proud to be able to support them in this way.” The goal of the initiative is to move forward education and make a meaningful difference in the local community. Its focus on education is a nod to WECU’s history as a credit union founded by Bellingham teachers in 1936.

The new recipients will join the previous year’s awardees, for a total of seven programs currently funded by Education First. The 2020-2021 awardees are Max Higbee Center, Whatcom Family YMCA’s Early Learning Centers, and Communities in Schools.
